Maddox

He pushed the revelation that Nic had visions with him in them to the back of his mind. There would be time later to wonder what that meant. He headed toward the easement between houses in hopes that the shield didn’t extend beyond the property line. The firefighters had been stopped, but they’d been close to the house itself. His shoulder scraped lightly against the neighboring house as he walked but he didn’t hit a barrier. As he’d hoped, the storm and the shield stopped at the property line. Nic followed Maddox. He wished she’d stayed behind.

The streets curved without rhyme or reason in this part of Redondo Beach, and he was able to come around to the back of the house. Nic still followed. Maddox walked on, wondering how close he could get to the house before hitting the shield. To the far edge of the backyard, as it turned out. Hitting the shield when he tried to step onto the lawn was like smacking into a concrete wall.

They stood on asphalt in the alley behind the house. He fingered the bag of spells in his pocket, running through in his mind the various kinds he’d brought. None were the right type to get them past the invisible barrier. He wasn’t sure if such a spell existed. Often these sorts of enchantments could only be removed by the caster.

“I have a key,” Nic said.

He stared across the yard to the house’s back door. What good was a key if they couldn’t get across the lawn to the door?

Nic opened her hand and again displayed the small, gold skeleton key she’d been holding. “I think this will get us through the shield.”

It seemed unlikely, but he asked, “How does it work?”

Her eyebrows rose and she shook her head. “I don’t know. I’ll try stuff until something clicks.”

That seemed like a fool’s errand, but for reasons he couldn’t explain, he believed she might well make it work.

“Go on,” he said.

She held out the key the way one would to open a door and twisted the key. Nothing happened. She poked the key into different spots in the air and turned it. Nothing changed.

She huffed out a hard breath. “Maybe I need spell words.”

“Try something that seems like it wouldn’t work,” he said.

Nic tilted her head and gave him a long look, then nodded. She lay the key flat against the edge of the shimmer. The shimmer vanished as if a switch had been thrown.

“Good job,” he muttered and took a cautious step forward. Nothing blocked him. He tried another step. He had no idea how Nic’s key had turned off the shield, but who was he to look askance at the gift?

“Wait here,” he said over his shoulder.

She stepped up beside him, sending him a defiant look. He wasn’t surprised. It felt like he’d known all along what sort of woman she was and that standing around waiting wasn’t her.

The back door was locked. He could break it down, but that key–

“Try the key on the door,” he said.
